Handira blanket with a fresh and joyful spirit. It's a lovely textile to use as a sofa throw or to hang.
A Handira is a Berber wedding blanket worn by the bride. It is tied around her neck and shoulders just like a cape. Handira are woven from wool and then decorated with sequins and cotton threads. This work brings together the women of the bride's family in a collaborative process.
For Berbers, objects and visual motifs contain meanings and purposes. The process of hand-weaving, itself, when undertaken mindfully, is thought to endow the textile with blessings. When complete, the wedding blanket serves not only as warmth and decoration for the bride, but also to ward off evil and to bestow fertility and good luck upon the newlyweds.
