Woven by Berber women for their babies, the Zindekh are crafted somewhat like a tapestry. This utterly unique little rug is a lovely baby's play area !
The Zindekh rugs always have about the same size, roughly 75 x 45 cm, the base of the woven (or embroidered composition is most often a plastic rice bag. Much like the Boucherouite rugs, they are made from wool yarns or recycled textiles.
These miniatures are very free in their composition and color choice, oscillating between abstraction and figurative echoes, reminiscent of contemporary artworks. With a captivating uniqueness, Zindekhs are increasingly coveted by art lovers and collectors. Whether presented on their own, enhanced by a frame, or arranged as a harmonious ensemble, their charm is enchanting. These completely unique pieces are truly a source of wonder for us.
This piece is a visual symphony of colors and patterns, speaking volumes about the vibrant Berber culture. The rug pulsates with a medley of rich, contrasting colors - radiant yellows, deep purples, vivacious reds, lush greens, and striking blues come together in an intricate dance. The design is an eclectic mix of geometric and abstract patterns, possibly symbolic in nature, reminiscent of traditional Berber motifs. Prominent in the rug's design are concentric circles of varying sizes, which appear to be interwoven with other abstract patterns. One can see shell or hand-like patterns in yellow and red, possibly hinting at the "Hand of Fatima" or "Khamsa," a common motif in North African cultures, symbolizing protection. Interspersed among these central designs are patches of contrasting colors and striped patterns, adding depth and intricacy to the composition. The rug's edges are rugged and frayed, with strands of red and green threads hanging loosely, attesting to its handcrafted nature.
The base texture appears thick and plush, suggesting not just visual appeal but also a tactile richness. This Zindekh rug is not just a decorative piece but a canvas narrating stories.
